Prabhuling jiroli
Arnala Fort, often called Jaldurg (Water Fort), is a beautiful island fort located off the coast of Virar, Maharashtra. Surrounded by the Arabian Sea, this fort has witnessed various rulers including the Portuguese, Marathas, and British. Rich with maritime significance, temple ruins, and scenic coastal beauty, Arnala is a must-visit for history buffs and sea lovers.
The island was first fortified by the Portuguese in the 1530s, who built a small bastioned fort.
It served as a naval base and outpost for controlling maritime trade north of Mumbai.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj planned to seize the fort but could not execute the takeover.
In 1737, Peshwa Bajirao Iโs admiral Shambhaji Angre captured the fort from the Portuguese.
It later fell to the British East India Company in the late 18th century.
