Chavand Fort, also known as Prasannagad, is a hidden gem nestled in the Junnar region of Maharashtra, forming one of the five forts of the Pancha Kille cluster which includes Jivdhan, Hadsar, Shivneri, and Naneghat. Less explored but rich in history and raw natural beauty, Chavand offers breathtaking views, spiritual sites, and a unique trekking experience.
The fort is believed to have been constructed during the Satavahana dynasty, making it one of the oldest forts in the region.
It served as a lookout point to monitor the Naneghat trade route, a crucial link between the Konkan coast and the Deccan plateau.
During the Maratha era, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj included it in his fortification system across the Sahyadris.
It played a small but strategic role in guarding the Junnar region.
The fort fell into British hands during the 1818 conquest, and many of its structures were destroyed.
