Gorakhgad Fort is a historical gem nestled in the Sahyadri ranges of Maharashtra. Popular among trekkers and history buffs, the fort offers not only adventure but also a deep connection to the past. Let's dive into everything you need to know before visiting this majestic hill fort.
Gorakhgad Fort is named after the revered saint Gorakhnath, one of the nine Naths (Navnath sampradaya), known for his yogic practices.
It is believed that the fort served as a meditation and spiritual center for Gorakhnath and his followers.
The fort dates back to the 9th century or earlier, and it holds religious as well as strategic importance.
During the Yadava dynasty (12thโ13th century), the fort acted as a watchtower due to its panoramic vantage points.
Later, it came under Bahmani Sultanate, and subsequently Mughals and Marathas.
Shivaji Maharaj used Gorakhgad as a part of his fort network to monitor the surrounding region.
After the decline of the Maratha Empire, the British took over the region, but the fort lost its military significance.
Since then, it has remained in ruins but still stands proud with remnants of its towers and caves.
