Nimgiri Fort is one of the lesser-known yet historically significant forts nestled in the Junnar region of Maharashtra. Surrounded by lush forests and ancient heritage, it offers an offbeat trekking experience. Often overshadowed by nearby giants like Shivneri and Jivdhan, Nimgiri stands with a quiet grace, rich history, and spiritual energy.
Nimgiri is believed to have been constructed during the Satavahana dynasty, dating back to the 1st century BCE to 2nd century CE.
It was used as a watchtower to monitor the surrounding plains and trade movements through the Naneghat route.
During the rise of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the fort was used as part of his strategic surveillance network.
Though not a major military base, it held regional value during the Maratha-Mughal conflicts.
Eventually captured and damaged by the British in the 19th century during their fort destruction campaign.
