Shirgaon Fort is a coastal fort located in Palghar district, Maharashtra, just north of Mumbai, offering a unique blend of Maratha, Portuguese, and British influences. Standing tall near the Arabian Sea, itโs an easy and enriching visit for history lovers, families, and architecture enthusiasts alike.
The exact origin of Shirgaon Fort is unclear but it is believed to date back to the Bahmani or Gujarat Sultanate period.
It was later captured and fortified by the Portuguese in the 16th century.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and later the Peshwas controlled the fort as part of their Konkan defense strategy.
It fell to the British East India Company by the early 19th century and was used as a coastal lookout post.
