The Amarnath Cave Temple, nestled in the snow-clad mountains of South Kashmir, is one of the most revered shrines in India dedicated to Lord Shiva. Home to the miraculous ice Shiva Lingam, this sacred cave is accessible only during the Amarnath Yatra, a pilgrimage filled with devotion, natural beauty, and spiritual transformation.
The legend dates back to when Lord Shiva revealed the secret of immortality (Amar Katha) to Goddess Parvati in this cave.
It is believed that the lingam forms naturally every year from water droplets freezing inside the cave.
Historical references go back to 11th century texts and Rajatarangini, the chronicles of Kashmir.
Rediscovered in early 15th century by a shepherd named Buta Malik, who was guided to the cave by a saint.
The naturally formed ice Shiva Lingam is worshipped as the embodiment of Lord Shiva.
Considered one of the most difficult but rewarding pilgrimages in Hinduism.
The cave is at 3,888 meters (12,756 ft) above sea level and is surrounded by glaciers and snowy peaks.
The Yatra is organized by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board every year between June and August.
