The Chamundeshwari Temple, perched atop Chamundi Hills near Mysore, Karnataka, is one of the most powerful temples dedicated to Goddess Durga (Chamundeshwari). It is a vibrant blend of mythology, devotion, scenic views, and ancient Dravidian architecture, drawing pilgrims and tourists alike.
The hill and shrine are mentioned in ancient texts as early as the 12th century, though the original shrine is believed to be even older.
Goddess Chamundeshwari is worshipped as the slayer of the demon Mahishasura, whose statue guards the hill.
The temple was renovated and expanded during the Wodeyar dynasty in the 17th century.
Chamundeshwari is considered the kuladevi (family deity) of the Wodeyars, the erstwhile rulers of Mysore.
Dedicated to Chamundeshwari, an incarnation of Durga known for destroying evil and granting courage.
Recognized as one of the Shakti Peethas – where Sati’s hair is believed to have fallen.
The temple is a hub for Navaratri celebrations in Mysore.
Pilgrims offer coconuts, bangles, and red sarees to the goddess.
