Prabhuling jiroli
The Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha is one of the most iconic pilgrimage sites in India and part of the sacred Char Dham Yatra. Dedicated to Lord Jagannath (a form of Vishnu/Krishna), it is famous for its massive annual Rath Yatra (Chariot Festival) and architectural mysteries.
Built in the 12th century CE by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty.
References found in Skanda Purana, marking it as a divine spot for worship long before the present structure.
The deities Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are wooden idols, uniquely carved from sacred Neem wood, and replaced periodically during Nabakalebara.
One of the four Char Dham sites, the others being Badrinath, Dwarka, and Rameswaram.
Unique for its Rath Yatra, where the deities are brought outside the sanctum and placed in massive wooden chariots.
The Mahaprasad offered here is cooked using traditional methods and served as divine blessings.
The templeโs flag flies in the opposite direction of the wind.
No shadow of the main dome is cast at any time of day.
Sea waves cannot be heard inside the temple premises despite its proximity to the coast.
During Rath Yatra, the chariots are constructed fresh each year from special wood and pull millions of pilgrims.
