The Khajuraho Temples, located in the Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh, are among India’s most treasured UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These temples are known for their stunning Nagara-style architecture, intricate erotic sculptures, and spiritual symbolism. Built by the Chandela dynasty, they reflect a time of artistic excellence and cultural openness in medieval India.
Constructed between the 9th and 12th centuries CE by the Chandela rulers.
Originally, there were 85 temples, of which 20 remain today in good condition.
The temples are divided into three groups:
Western Group (largest and most ornate)
Eastern Group (mainly Jain temples)
Southern Group (smaller, scattered temples)
The temples depict daily life, gods and goddesses, musicians, dancers, and spiritual union.
Primarily dedicated to Hindu deities (Shiva, Vishnu) and Jain Tirthankaras.
Symbolize the four goals of life in Hinduism: Dharma (duty), Artha (prosperity), Kama (desire), Moksha (liberation).
Erotic carvings represent Tantric traditions and the union of the divine and human.
A site of pilgrimage, art study, and cultural exploration.
