Prabhuling jiroli
The Mahakaleshwar Temple, located in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and one of the most sacred shrines in India. It stands on the banks of the holy Kshipra River, drawing millions of devotees each year for its spiritual energy, ancient architecture, and famous Bhasma Aarti ritual.
The Mahakaleshwar shrine is mentioned in Puranas, including the Skanda Purana and Shiva Purana.
Believed to be constructed initially by King Chandrasena of Ujjain, it was later enhanced by the Paramara dynasty and reconstructed in the 18th century by Maratha general Ranoji Shinde.
It is unique as the only south-facing Jyotirlinga and is said to be Swayambhu (self-manifested).
Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is associated with time (Kaal) and death (Mahakaal), believed to protect devotees from untimely death.
The temple hosts the Bhasma Aarti, where the deity is worshipped with sacred ash – a powerful and rare ritual performed only at this shrine.
Major festivals include Maha Shivaratri, Shravan Month, and Nag Panchami.
