The Pandharpur Vithoba Temple, located on the banks of the Chandrabhaga River in Solapur district, Maharashtra, is one of the most revered Vaishnava pilgrimage sites in India. Devotees flock here to worship Lord Vithoba (Vitthal) – a form of Lord Krishna/Vishnu – often with his consort Rakhumai (Rukmini).
The temple dates back to the 12th century, with roots in the Bhakti movement.
Legends say Lord Krishna appeared as Vithoba (standing on a brick) for his devotee Pundalik.
The temple became a center of devotion for Sant Dnyaneshwar, Tukaram, Namdev, Eknath, and other Varkari saints.
Built by Hoysala and later Yadava kings, the temple’s sanctity grew as part of Maharashtra’s spiritual awakening.
Vithoba is worshipped as the Lord of the masses – standing hands-on-hips, symbolizing patience and presence.
Pandharpur is considered “Dakshin Kashi” – southern Kashi, holding immense spiritual weight.
Center of the Varkari Sampradaya, where lakhs walk barefoot in Ashadhi Ekadashi and Kartiki Ekadashi pilgrimages.
Sant poetry, abhangas, and kirtans glorify the Vitthal-Rakhumai love and surrender.
