Prabhuling jiroli
The Sun Temple of Konark is one of Indiaโs most spectacular monuments and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known as the Black Pagoda in ancient times, this 13th-century temple is a masterpiece of Kalinga architecture, shaped like a colossal chariot dedicated to the Sun God Surya.
Built in the 13th century CE by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty.
Designed as a massive stone chariot with 24 intricately carved wheels and drawn by seven stone horses.
The main sanctum (now in ruins) was once over 200 feet tall, making it one of the tallest temples of its time.
Built entirely from chlorite, laterite, and khondalite stone.
Dedicated to Surya, the Hindu sun god, symbolizing energy, life, and cosmic power.
Designed so that the first rays of the sun would touch the main entrance.
Represents a synthesis of spiritual devotion, astronomical precision, and artistic brilliance.
Plays a central role in Odishaโs cultural identity.
The 24 wheels represent hours of the day and months of the year.
Magnetic idol once suspended mid-air (believed to have been looted or removed).
Wheels function as sundials, telling accurate time even today.
Intricate sculptures depict daily life, deities, dancers, animals, and celestial beings.
